We are Europe

In 'We are Europe' Lieve Blancquaert goes on road trip through the European Union, 35 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It's a six-part docu-series for Belgian Television Channel VRT CANVAS and VRT MAX from Tuesday, March 5 on.

In addition to the program, there is also the exhibition 'We are Europe', featuring the most beautiful portraits Lieve took on the trip. The expo is a co-production of Kunsthal Mechelen and Mechelen Feest/Construct Europe and can be seen in the exhibition halls at Cultuurcentrum Mechelen from March 16 to June 30, 2024. This exhibition

The accompanying book 'We are Europe - Encounter with a continent' is a publication of Hannibal Books in collaboration with VRT CANVAS. It appears simultaneously with the series. You can buy it here.

The fall of the Berlin Wall motivated photographer and journalist Lieve Blancquaert to set off on an epic tour of Europe in her campervan. She visited all twenty-seven member states of the European Union in search of the origins of this identity. She wanted to hear and feel what holds us together and what divides us. Her many personal encounters reveal time and again that our own language, history, concerns, desires and dreams are far more universal than we might at first think. Europeans as such don’t exist, and yet we are connected in many different ways, whether we like it or not. Through hundreds of penetrating images and dozens of colourful stories, Lieve Blancquaert shows, as in a travel diary, the complexity, diversity and beauty of this vulnerable continent.
