5 dialogen - 5 dialogues

23th of April 2018 until the 26th of August 2018 – Museum Het Valkhof, Nijmegen.

Lieve Blancquaert is fascinated by the ways emotions have been depicted for centuries. For this exposition, she looked for works from the collection of Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen that could enter into dialogue with her own work and made five intriguing combinations.

One of the dialogues deals with the late medieval image of Mary grieving the death of her son. Blancquaert contrasts it with a filmed portrait of a mother in Zaatari, a refugee camp in Jordan. She asked this mother just one question: 'Tell me the life of your son, from the moment he grew inside you until today.' Without understanding her, as a visitor you hear her fear and despair, that she has lost him for two years and that she fears she will not find him again and will never see him again.

Lieve Blancquaert makes the visitor observe and listen, and think about universal feelings of powerlessness, fear and pain.
